Praying Mantis Boxing in Poland
In Poland, the first classes in the Praying Mantis style (Tanglang Men) were opened in 1985. At first, they all belonged unofficially to the Polish Praying Mantis Kung Fu Centre, which, on 12 November 1991, was renamed Polish Praying Mantis Kung Fu Society. At present, it is a national organisation registered in the Warsaw Voievodship Court, with branches in several Polish cities.
Polish Praying Mantis Kung Fu Society, since the very beginning, has been in touch with numerous traditional gong fu organisations around the world. On three occasions (in 1985, 1988 and 1991) the Society organised seminars with the international Seven Star Praying Mantis champion, shifu Kai Uwe Pel from Germany. Up until 1993 Tanglang Men was taught in the Polish Praying Mantis Kung Fu Society after master Kai Uwe Pel, a student of master Lee Kam Wing from Hong Kong (master Luo Guangyu line). During that period (1985-1991), shifu Sławomir Milczarek, President of the Society, visited Germany on several occasions. In 1995 instructor Marek Piechotka also stayed in Germany, continuing his training under master Kai Uwe Pel.
In July 1993, during his stay in Jinan (Shandong Province, China), shifu Sławomir Milczarek established contacts with master Yu Tiancheng, one of the best disciples of master Lin Jingshan from Yantai. From this moment on, all classes in Poland have trained Tanglang Men according to the master Lin Jingshan line.
In the years 1994, 1997, 1999, 2001 master Yu Tiancheng visited Poland, where he taught at several-week long seminars with the Society members. In 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2002 Polish Praying Mantis Kung Fu Society instructors stayed in Yantai, further developing their skills in the traditional Tanglang style.
After master Yu Tiancheng passed away, Polish Praying Mantis Kung Fu Society instructors have visited Yantai and Penglai four times for training with shishu Yu Tianlu and da shixiong Liu Xianming and shixiong Lu Yanbo.
In 1993, Society President shifu Sławomir Milczarek together with master Kai Uwe Pel visited Singapore and Malaysia, where they were introduced to other lines of the style, mainly after master Wong Kam Hung.
In 1996 and 1997 shifu Sławomir Milczarek went to Shanghai, where he studied inner gong fu styles, such as Yang Shi Taiji Quan under master Feng Rulong (Shanghai Wushu Xie Hui) and Xingyi Quan under master Yang Chende (Shanghai Gui Ting Nei Jia Quan Xie Hui).
From August 1999 to September 2000 and from June 2001 to August 2002 one of the older students of the Society, Marcin Jacoby, stayed in Taiwan, where he studied Eight Steps Praying Mantis (Babu Tanglang Quan) under master Liu Zhizhong, student of master Peng Hanping.
For 18 years, Polish Praying Mantis Kung Fu Society has been teaching classes at several sites in Poland, such as Warsaw, Suwalki, Kielce, Busko-Zdrój, Torun, Ostroleka, Lodz and Lublin. During this period several thousands of Chinese martial arts enthusiasts attended the Society’s classes.
In the 18 years since the establishment of the Society, its students have been competing in numerous high-league championships. At national events, they have been awarded tens of medals and titles, including Champion of Poland titles. One of the bigger international successes of the Society is the participation in the 7th Int’l Traditional Kung Fu Tournament in Perugia in 1998, where the Society won one gold and one bronze medal. One year later in the Second World Championships in Traditional Kung Fu, the Society competitors won nine medals, five of which were gold. In the 8th World Championships in Sanda (traditional fighting) in May of 2000, the Society won one silver and two bronze medals in the senior division, and ten gold and nine silver in the junior division.
In 1998, two of the Society competitors participated in the Int’l Wushu Tournament in Jinan (China). In 2000, four competitors represented the Society at the Tanglang Men tournament in Qingdao. They won four gold medals in the hand forms and weapon forms categories. It was also a valuable opportunity to look at the Tanglang Men taught in Qingdao, where the most widespread variety is the one taught by master Li Zhanyuan, student of master Hu Rongfu. In 2002 three competitors took part at the Tanglang tournament in Yantai. They won two gold medals and two silver medals.
Polish Praying Mantis Kung Fu Society members have for many years been participating in various tournaments, winning numerous medals and World and Poland Champion titles. Among the competitors with the biggest merit are instructors: Marek Piechotka (professional free fighting championships competitor, gold medallist from Yantai 2002), Marek Borówek (double bronze world medalist in free fighting), Krzysztof Kryszczuk (double world champion in Pushing Hands, and world free fighting champion 1999), Tomasz Zelek (champion of Poland and double gold medalist from Qingdao), and Piotr Jeleniewski (gold medalist from Qingdao and frequent medalist at national events). In September 2005 Krzysztof Kryszczuk won first place in European Championships in Submission Wrestling in blue belt category. Now Krzysztof Kryszczuk is living and working in Switzerland.
Polish Praying Mantis Kung Fu Society not only participates in sport tournaments, but also organises sport events. In 1998 in Lodz, it hosted the First Open Praying Mantis Championships of Poland, with the participation of over 100 competitors from various clubs around the country. In 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004 it organised traditional free sparring competitions as the first club in Poland. The event was run according to the sanda (free fighting) rules from Yantai, China. Each year, Polish Praying Mantis Kung Fu Society organises summer and winter kung fu camps.
